Meet our Japanese cookery teacher
Our Japanese cookery teacher Yoko Ono was born in Nagoya on the east coast of central Japan. She left Japan to become a language tutor in University College, Cork, Ireland. In 2001 she moved to Oxford to take up a senior lecturer in Japanese Studies position at Oxford Brookes University. I met her when a long-term customer of mine, a lovely Japanese lady, introduced us.
Yoko loves good food, so she decided to leave her lecturing job in 2019 to pursue her passion for food, setting up a catering business delivering authentic Japanese food including sushi and sashimi. She also does demonstrations at various food festivals.
Yoko teaches Japanese cooking with the objective of promoting better understanding of Japanese culture and cuisine, and she would also like to dispel a number of myths surrounding sushi that we have here in the UK. The first myth is that sushi is difficult - you will be surprised to find, with a little practice and guidance, how easy sushi making is.
In future classes Yoko will take us through the wonders of Japanese cuisine, including authentic Japanese dumplings and regional dishes, from UK favourites to undiscovered treasures.
Come along and get started on your journey of discovery of Japanese cuisine with Japanese Sushi making.
